My Take on Oscar’s Best Picture Nominees 2010
by Logan Burd
I’ll go backwards until there’s a year where I saw none of them…hopefully that’s not soon!
Winner – The King’s Speech
This wonderful true story is touching, dramatic, but with a perfect touch of wit. Colin Firth absolutely deserved Best Actor, better than any Best Actor winner in years. And his supporting cast is just as splendid. This one will get a full review later. I give it an A
Black Swan
Check it out, one of my longest reviews. A+
The Fighter
This, too, will render a full review soon. But Christian Bale was spectacular, and Wahlberg was solid. The story was great and the supporting cast was perfect. A very believable family drama. B
Inception
Fantastic story, the stuff dreams are made of–ironic, eh? The ending is divisive, which makes for a wonderful water cooler film. And the acting is great. I mean, it is Leo Dicaprio. B+
The Kids are All Right
Movies about two-mother families are a rarity. This one is a wonderful example. The acting is deeply emotional, the story is fascinating, and the script is comical but deep and thoughtful. B+
127 Hours
James Franco is great, but the story isn’t made entirely captivating to me. Not that it really could be, taking place in one spot and with one person for…well…127 hours. B-
The Social Network
Most overrated film of the year. It’s solid, especially since it’s based on a true story. Armie Hammer breaks out. But Jesse Eisenberg isn’t impressive in the role. Good, but not great by any means. C+
Toy Story 3
You can read my full review here. A
True Grit
Not near as good as the original. It wasn’t even adapted, it seemed like it went word-for-word. Not too great, though Jeff Bridges was solid. C
Winter’s Bone
A solid mystery thriller, starring Jennifer Lawrence who is splendid in the deep, emotional role. B
I’ll tackle 2009 soon, watch out for my grades on Oscar’s picks! Comment and subscribe, and, as always, come again!

[...] here, but Focus Features has a similar reputation. Beginners, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, The Kids Are All Right, and Atonement are just a few examples of such tremendous films. The Debt doesn’t quite live [...]
